Just a few days ago I was lucky enough to catch the Washington DC date of Garbage’s 20th Anniversary Tour and was mesmerized by opening act Torres. I was blown away by the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter’s brand of moody, electronic, rock. “Strange Hellos” was the standout of the setlist, which opens slowly but punches you in the face about 50 seconds in. Mackenzie Scott’s vocals, alternating between a haunting moan and a near-shrieking banshee wail, bring to mind another queen of 90’s alt rock, PJ Harvey, with the biting lyrics: “What’s mine isn’t really yours, but I hope you find what you’re looking for.”
