Review: Tom Papa: Human Mule

“I know you wanted to cancel, I almost did too…”

Filmed at the Hanna Theatre in Cleveland last July, Tom Papa’s latest hour-long special covers a lot of relatable content- fatherhood, being an American today, adult coloring books. If you aren’t able to watch it on EPIX (released December 9th), starting today you can download the album version, via Comedy Dynamics, on all digital audio services.

Papa has more than 20 years of experience as a stand-up comedian. He’s also well known for his podcast and SiriusXM show, Come to Papa, which often features other top comedians such as Mel Brooks, Ray Romano, Carl Reiner and Jerry Seinfeld. Screen credits include episodes of The Knick; the HBO film, Behind the Candelabra and guest spots on The Jim Gaffigan Show and Inside Amy Schumer. Chances are, you saw him in Chris Rock’s Top Five too.

Human Mule is Papa’s third comedy special (2013’s Freaked Out and 2011’s Live in New York were directed by Rob Zombie), and his fourth comedy album. After thanking the audience for not canceling on him for the taping of the show, Papa begins comedic storytelling that keeps listeners hanging on to every word. Why does he want his kids to be more like cats? How were his Disney experiences? What are some ways you can die?

Whether you watch Tom make his audience laugh, or just listen, this is a good one. Check it out this weekend. You can also catch up on his podcasts here.
