It was a memorable night of shredding and arpeggios at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville NJ. It’s a solid venue, and they run a tight ship and are pretty strict about everything. I was unfortunately only able to shoot one band up close, but was still able to capture most of the action throughout the night.
The night started out with the band Ripped, “New Jersey’s best kept secret” (their words not mine). This salty crew jammed with a familiar hard rock sound. Overall an upbeat set with notes of whiskey, lots of whiskey.
Midnite Hellion never disappoints and always amplifies the energy in the room. Based in Trenton, their blend of metal and thrash is a perfect mesh to get anyone fired up about their music. I always enjoy watching these guys power through their set. Definitely a band to watch progress.
There was also a surprise warm up act with no name and I can’t find anything about them online. Not sure if they are touring with Yngwie but this mystery band definitely had talent and played some iconic covers, my favorite being Blondie. Rock on mystery band!
Say what you like about Yngwie, love him or hate him, he is still a force of metal mastery. Since the 80’s he’s been amazing audiences with his neoclassical style fused with heavy metal. It truly is a spectacle to be seen as well. I felt transported back to the glam days of metal with studded leather and hair, lots of hair. It was absolutely captivating watching his fingers blur with perfection. Every note was flawless and every song was executed with a precise flair only Yngwie could deliver. Even after all these years, Malmsteen is still a shiny metal god.
