As a dumb kid wearing out my “Kerplunk” and “1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours” cassettes, I only had some vague idea of the punk rock primordial soup in California’s East Bay that birthed not only Green Day but many of their Lookout Records contemporaries, and as a lifelong fan of music documentaries I’m extremely happy that the full story is now finally being told in that format, to stand alongside classics like The Decline of Western Civilization series and The Rolling Stones’ immortal Gimmie Shelter.
Produced by Green Day themselves and narrated by fellow garage rock legend Iggy Pop, Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk is definitely something I’d be excited just to see, so we’re ecstatic to be co-presenting the local screening with the Philadelphia Film Society at the Prince Music Theater on 8/30, as well as presenting a rare daylight set from An Albatross frontman/world renowned DJ Edward B. Geida III, and presiding over a trivia contest with some seriously outstanding mystery prizes.
As if that wasn’t enough, visit us on Facebook for a chance to win one of 5 sets of 2 passes for the Wednesday night screening! Winners will be announced this Monday, so good luck, and failing that, tickets are available here. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to relive one of US Punk’s most vibrant and vital eras on the big screen!
