Interview: Andrew W.K.

Resurrection of the Party God

Motivational speaker, Vice columnist, Cartoon Network regular and New York nightclub entrepreneur Andrew W.K. is back! But did he ever really go away? A near omnipresent figure in certain circles of counterculture, it’s almost impossible to believe that he hasn’t released a record in over 10 years and hasn’t toured behind his hard rockin’ party metal musical first love in over 15! Remedying that grievous error, W.K. is mounting a large scale, full band US tour this fall ahead of a highly anticipated comeback record. What makes the man who does what he likes and likes what he does tick? Let’s find out together…

On party questions…

Andrew W.K is surprisingly not tired of partying or party questions. He thinks party questions count as partying!

On his side line in motivational speaking…

His mission in music is to generate an energetic feeling, which is also helpful in motivational speaking so it went kind of hand in hand. In fact, the motivational speaking started through interviews. He noticed he was expressing this positivity during interviews and realized it was something he enjoyed doing.

On which he prefers…

He loves touring both as a motivational speaker and musician and feels that he tries to cultivate the same energy in both fields, but music is really his greatest passion.

On being an unlikely positive force in the typically negative world of hard rock and heavy metal…

W.K. doesn’t find people in the industry to be negative even if their style of music or art is dark. He even claims that the people that make the darkest music or art are often the most cheerful. He thinks everyone is just trying to feel cheerful.

On his musical origins…

His dad was taking piano lessons when he was born so he always had access to that instrument and it was an instant magnetism. The attraction was very primal and instinctual. Music not only makes him feel good emotionally, but also physically.

On his diehard fans…

Andrew’s interaction with his devoted fans is weird … in the best way! It’s beautifully weird. W.K. finds himself relating to people he’d never have had the opportunity to meet. It’s an intimate expression and it goes both ways. The fans enthusiasm fuels him just as much as his fuels theirs.

Philly Party Tip:

He hopes people from all places can embrace Philadelphia’s mantra of brotherly love. He wants everyone to feel that brotherly and sisterly love no matter where they are partying.

The future…

The tour is ramping up for a new album which is the first in over 10 years, a break that he never intended to be so long. Time just flew by and it all feels like it just started even though it’s been over 15 years since his last tour. Andrew W.K. wants to be more productive and is hoping for this to signal the beginning of a new era of activity.

Don’t miss Andrew W.K. at the TLA on 10/11.
